Botswana - SAFARIS & TOURS

See Venice and die is what they said in earlier days. They did not know about the Okavango Delta then, this enormous, rare and incredibly beautiful inland delta that never sleeps. It is however most lively after rains in the north and the river from Angola fills the delta. It does of course help if it also rains in Botswana, but there are years with little rain and then only the northern part of the delta will have enough water for a proper mokoro safari -dug out tree-trunk canoe. You paddle yourself from one island to the next, with your guide and your tent and other equipment.

If a mokoro safari does not sound tempting you can stay in one of the many exquisite safari lodges. Some of these will offer you wildlife sightings both on foot, from a vehicle and from some form of boat. Others will mostly take you driving and walking in search of wildlife. No matter what time of the year and what place in the delta you go to, you are guaranteed some amazing wild life experiences.

In the north eastern corner Botswana is bordering not only Namibia but also Zambia and Zimbabwe. If you cross the Chobe River you get to Namibia, crossing the Zambezi by Kasane you will reach Zambia and from northern Chobe there is good road connection to Zimbabwe. This means that a safari in Botswana can easily be combined with a visit to Victoria Falls.

A wildlife safari in Botswana is relatively costly. Their policies of nature conservation are very strict and aim at avoiding mass tourism. Nature- and ecology friendly building techniques are high-cost and the taxation on tourism fairly high. The aim is to secure nature and ecosystems for future generations and as a tourist going there you will realize that it is worth it.

The Kalahari Desert covers large portions of Botswana stretching over central and eastern parts of the country and into South Africa and Namibia. There is however life in this desert, in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve the sand dunes are covered with grasses and bush and in some places you find larger trees. Thus the Central Kalahari is home to a wide range of wildlife, the northern part being known as the best for safaris, particularly if the rains have been good. In this area you may be so lucky as to spot a black-maned lion.

The capital Gaborone is located in the south. For most tourists this is just a stopover en route to Maun in the southern part of the Delta, the starting point for most safaris. Or you fly directly to Maun from Johannesburg in South Africa.

Mode of transport is mostly light aircrafts as many places in the Delta can be reached only by plain.
