Zambia - SAFARIS & TOURS

A walking safari in South Luangwa National Park is among the best experiences there are. You are in close proximity of small things, you notice the smells, your senses are awake, ears sharpened and your body is in constant readiness for a quick retreat, full stop or lay low.

One can rightly say that Zambia is the ultimate safari destination. The wilderness is wilder in a way, more untouched. Around 30% of Zambia is dedicated to wilderness areas, and this gives 20 National Parks and 34 Game Management areas. Best known of the national parks is Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Kafue. Lochinvar National Park only a few hours from the capital Lusaka will be known to birders. The roads in Zambia are mostly not suited for sedans, it is recommended to fly or use 4x4 rental or private transport.

The Luangwa valley in the north-east is the southern end of the Rift Valley. Here you will find the dynamic Luangwa river and 20 000 sq. meter of unsurpassed wilderness. The valley is known for its high concentration of wildlife and birds. The concept walking safari stems from South Luangwa and here you can venture on a mobile safari – walking from one camp to the other while your luggage is being transported for you. A mobile safari is a totally unique experience.

In the south west you find Lake Kariba and east of the dam the Zambezi-valley and Lower Zambezi National park. The Zambezi River is teeming with fish, and the valley, with permanent water and from time to time great floodplains, attracts huge amounts of elephants, antelopes, carnivores and birds. And of course, tourists doing game driving from boats or vehicles. Zimbabwe is on the other side of the river.

Victoria Falls is located west of Lake Kariba. The Zambezi River makes up the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and just below the falls there is a bridge that you can cross on foot or by car. Livingstone is on the Zambian side, about 10 km from the falls, and on the Zimbabwean side you find the little town of Victoria Falls in walking distance from the falls. The area around the falls is teeming with hotels and tourists from all corners flock to see and experience this wonder. Please also see separate page for Victoria Falls.
